“Sad all round really,” Bryce commented. “Neighbours say she’d been attacking him for years.”

“So you think this is them?” Sergeant Pearce asked.

“More than likely. He tied her up, set the fire and put a bullet through his brain.” Bryce replied. “Final identification will be by their teeth.”

“it wasn’t just those I burnt,” Roger pointed to the fingers on the plate, no longer sounding triumphant, but defeated.

He placed a charred box in front of Ann.

“Recognise it?” he asked.

Ann did.

“Yes: our memory box, and like our memories it’s nothing more than ash now too.”

“You used to say that I was your hero.” Roger was in tears. “What went wrong?”

Ann stared at the plate in front of her, at her burnt fingers, wondering something similar. He’d never been her hero, just her stopgap.

Her mistake, she realised. But she could’nt tell him now.

Roger placed a plate beside Ann’s disfigured hand. Mercifully she hadn’t felt anything.

She didn’t want to look but when she did her stomach reeled at the sight of her three fingers sitting in the middle of the plate covered in breadcrumbs and fried.

“Brown sauce on top?” Roger asked.

“It’s Friday so it should be fish fingers, your favourite food.” Roger laughed . That laugh was even more terrifying than the bloodied knife.

“Well tonight I’ve added a little twist to that,” Roger laughed again.

He lifted Ann’s hand onto the table where she could see it, minus three fingers.

Ann was getting used to the strange lack of sensations, almost liking it. If only Roger wasn’t behaving so out of character.

He appeared right before her again. “Grow some, you said,” he snarled. “Well, dearest, how do you like the new Roger?”

His face was replaced by a bloody knife.

“How are you feeling, dearest?” Roger leaned over Ann peering deep into her eyes.

Ann had no power to respond. Although her mind was as quick as ever her body felt lifeless.

“Well, we are quiet today aren’t we? No orders for Roger today? No dear, today is Roger’s playtime”.
